An Overview of Social Conservativism

Social conservatism was ushered into American politics with the so-called Reagan Revolution in 1981, and renewed its strength in 1994, with the Republican takeover of US Congress. The movement slowly grew in prominence and political power until hitting a plateau and stagnating in the first decade of the twenty-first century under President George W. Bush. Bush ran as a â€Å"compassionate conservative† in 2000, which appealed to a large bloc of conservative voters, and began to act on his platform with the establishment of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. The terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, changed the tone of the Bush administration, which took a turn toward hawkishness and Christian fundamentalism. The new foreign policy of â€Å"pre-emptive war† created a rift between traditional conservatives and conservatives aligned with the Bush administration. Due to his original campaign platform, conservatives became associated with the â€Å"new† Bush administration and an anti-conservative sentiment has nearly destroyed the movement.In most areas of the country, Republicans align themselves with the Christian right refer to themselves as â€Å"conservatives† since fundamental Christianity and social conservatism have many tenets in common. Ideology The phrase â€Å"political conservative† is most associated with the ideologies of social conservatism. Indeed, most of today’s conservatives see themselves as social conservatives, although there are other types. The following list contains common beliefs with which most social conservatives identify. They include: Advancing pro-life and anti-abortion stances on unwanted or unplanned pregnanciesAdvocating for pro-family legislation and a ban on gay marriageEliminating federal funding for embryonic stem-cell research and finding alternative methods of researchProtecting the Second Amendment right to bear armsMaintaining a strong national defenseProtecting US economic interests against foreign threats and eliminating the need for trade unionsOpposing   illegal immigrationLimiting welfare spending by creating economic opportunities for America’s needyLifting the ban on school prayerImplementing high tariffs on countries that do not uphold human rights It is important to mention that social conservatives can believe in every one of these tenets or just a few. The â€Å"typical† social conservative strongly supports them all. Criticisms Because the preceding issues are so black and white, there is a considerable amount of criticism from not only liberals but also other conservatives. Not all types of conservatives agree whole-heartedly with these ideologies, and sometimes denounce the vigilance with which hard-line social conservatives choose to advocate their positions.The radical right has also placed a large stake in the social conservative movement and has used it in many cases as a way to promote Christianity or to proselytize. In these cases, the entire movement is sometimes censured by mass media and liberal ideologues.Each of the tenets mentioned above has a corresponding group or groups which oppose it, making social conservatism a highly criticized political belief system. Consequently, it is the most popular and most scrutinized of the conservative â€Å"types.† Political Relevance Of the different types of conservatism, social conservatism is by far the most politically relevant. Social conservatives have dominated Republican politics and even other political parties such as the Constitution Party. Many of the key planks in the social conservative agenda are high on the Republican Party’s â€Å"to-do† list.In recent years, social conservatism has taken repeated hits thanks in large part to the presidency of George W. Bush, but its network is still strong. My main concern was finding someone to agree with me about this movie when the entire country seems to be fascinated with the American Pies, the Alien VS. Predators and the Spongebob Squarepants. The fact is that most of the innocence has been taken away from the so called Pepsi generation and even kids of the 90s. The most simple values and genius are often overlooked in this movie and for that matter movies of the same caliber (if that is even possible). The Goonies comes across to me as pure fun and excitement. It plays on all of our childhood fantasies and our adult senses. Tourists are the people who opt to travel and stay in destinations which, in most cases, are not their usual daily environments for a period of more than twenty four hours but not exceeding one year. Tourists travel for business, leisure and other purposes which are not related to the environments visited. The United Nations classified Tourism in three forms in 1994: domestic, inbound and outbound tourism. Domestic tourism involves the travel of residents or citizens of a given country in their country and not outside. Inbound tourism, involves non residents who opt to travel in a given country. Outbound is tourism where residents of a country opt to travel to another country. The World Tourism Organization report of 2009 places the top ten countries that attracted the highest number of tourists as being France, the United States of America, Spain, China, Italy, United Kingdom, Turkey, Germany, Malaysia, and Mexico. The Tourism industry does not have a secure future because based on several parameters. Statistics indicate that the number of tourists who have been visiting different countries continues to dwindle on a yearly basis in some tourist destinations because of several factors. These factors include dwindling economies, increasing gas prices, natural disasters, terrorism threats and climate changes. The economy of a country is a major factor that affects the tourism industry. If people of a country are retrenched from their work, they become worried about how they are going to pay their expenses like rent and mortgage and as such, they do not see the reason as to why they should spend their money on travel. Many people all over the world always consider travel as a luxury that can only be indulged in when someone has made some extra income or when the times are extremely good. When the hard times come biting, one of the expenditures that are always cut on many peopleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s budget is travel tourism. This is especially true when the traveling options like cruises are expensive and pricey. Therefore, the high cost and standards of living cannot enable people to promote the tourism industry because they consider it as a luxury, Stynes (2008 p. 37). The dwindling economies have led to recessions and low purchasing power of people who travel and promote the tourism industry therefore making its future to be insecure. People are now reluctant to spend their money on tourism because of the decreasing and dwindling economies. High inflation also causes a decrease in the purchasing power of the countries and therefore when one nation experiences a high rate of inflation and a decrease in the purchasing power, then all the nations are affected. This in turn makes the tourism industry to be very insecure. Gas prices have also had an impact on the tourism industry. The reason is that, when people are spending more of their money on gas, they will usually detest taking long road trips which they would have otherwise gone on. The added expense of pricey fuel makes the people to have less money in their pockets. On the other side, most of the firms involved in the tourism industry like bus companies and the airlines are also under obligations to pay for the gas as well. When the prices of gas go a little bit higher, then the bus companies and the airlines often incur an added cost. In return, they are forced to increase their prices to account for the price increase, forcing people not to go for tourism trips because of the increased traveling costs. The price of gas is affected by many factors such as conflicts in the Middle East where most of it is produced. There are many threats which do not seem to subside, and as a result oil prices are expected to continue rising. This reason there fore makes the future of the tourism industry to be bleak and insecure. Natural disasters are also factors that can have an influence or impact on some certain destinations. Of course, people will not be worried about traveling if they are hit by natural disasters and on the other side, people will not be willing to visit tourist destinations which have been hit by natural disasters. For example, if California was hit by a big earthquake, tourists will be afraid to visit Los Angeles and other tourist areas which are located around. Tourist destinations which are commonly hit by the hurricanes are often shunned by the tourists. Over the years, natural disasters have been increasing in frequency and intensity. Tsunamis are occurring because of the climate changes which do not only affect the atmosphere and the nations as well but also the earthà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s crust. This is also called market segmentation and it involves the identification of the different types or groups of customers who exist in a country and the subsequent treatment of each type of tourist as a very different segment. Some of the different types of tourists that may need different treatment include the leisure tourists, business tourist, the independent tourist, the package holiday makers and the age specific groups. Failure of the tourism industry to treat the tourists according to their needs reduces the number of their clients and therefore creating a negative impact. It therefore remains a fact that when disaster, war or even terror strikes any country, the arrival of the tourists in these nations will go on a declining end and this will negatively affect the economy of the nations which greatly rely on the tourism industry as a source of income. Another factor that will make the tourism industry not to be secure is the climate change which has greatly affected many nations. The destruction of the natural eco-system all over the world will deplete all the beautiful sceneries and animals that are a major source of tourist attraction and therefore making the future of this sector to be bleak and insecure. This current state of events proves the fact that insecurity often hampers investment. The truth is it was all a falsity. Those people who smoke will experience more pain and heartache in their shortened lifetime than that of non-smokers.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  While I have never smoked, I have seen what it can do to not only those who do smoke, but the people they know as well. Both of my mom’s parents have smoked ever since she had been born. Smoking was not an unusual sight to her. She was also not aware of the adverse affects that smoking has physically, mentally, and emotionally. Nicotine, which is the drug in cigarettes, has been said to be one of the most addictive drugs.
